Home County Goes Green

In 2008, a test pilot greening initiative was launched between the City of London, Waste Free World and other festivals that use Victoria Park to address the amount of waste produced from special events. This project was spear-headed by Home County Folk Festival and Waste Free World, and also involved Sunfest and Ribfest, two other large festivals that use Victoria Park. The objective was to reduce the waste footprint left behind after so many festival-goers have left, and to increase the diversion rate so less garbage went to landfill. In 2008, Home County Folk Festival diverted 70% of waste from landfill, resulting in the City of Londons Greening of the Festivals Committee winning the RCO Recycling Council of Canada Gold Award. Thanks to the City of London, TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation and The London Community Foundation for sponsoring our 2008 greening festival initiatives, and to Youth Opportunities Unlimited and Ecostation Volunteers for helping to make sure there was a right place for every kind of waste.

For 2009, the greening program will see further improvements. Vendors as well as patrons will be assisted to effectively use Eco-Stations to separate garbage into compostables (food scraps and biogradable disposables), recyclables, (glass, plastic, metal and cardboard products) and waste that will go to landfill. Patrons will be able to pay a $3 deposit to use stainless steel plates and cutlery that will be washed in an industrial dishwasher and reused countless times.

Heres how you can help:

  1. Watch for the Eco-Stations to separate your waste.
  2. Bring refillable water bottles as Victoria Park has water fountains and water stations. This will cut back on single-use plastic water bottles.
  3. You are encouraged to bring your own reusable containers, mugs, dishes and cutlery. A rinsing station will be available. Alternative recyclable plates and cutlery will be still offered.
  4. Bring a backpack or reusable cloth bags for your purchases at the craft booths.
  5. Volunteer or Donate if you would like to help our greening initiative. Your support would be greatly appreciated.Visit our Volunteer page or Donations page to help out.

The environment is important to Home County Folk Festival. Let’s all try to reduce our waste together!
